Some crazy blue t-shirt mob running over Tower Bridge, which I was part of!

September… done!

We had a busy one as always seems to be the case, even though I had just over 2 weeks off, I still felt like there was not much not time to relax. Having said that, we got through a few Netflix series (Luther, Stranger things) so maybe I’m talking out of my rear end 🙂

Anyway let’s see how the finances went down shall we…?

expenses

As usual you can check out my Awesome FI Tracking Spreadsheet for a full breakdown of Income/Expense tracking and Net Worth tracking, as well as updated some of the summary sheets as well. Remember you can copy this to use/update as you please using Google Sheets “File -> Make a copy” menu command!

The figures below as usual represent: £Current Month (£2018 Monthly Average / £Monthly Average Target)

  • Total £3902 (£4234 / £3205) – Over budget again, shock!
  • Mortgage £848 (£848 / £848)
  • Household/Bills £910 (£690 / £602) – Average here isn’t actually *that* badly over although £90/month over is actually over £1000/year which obviously sounds much worse. Maybe I should start tracking the projected yearly spend which would put this in a bit more obvious terms? Might be a good idea for next year! Anyway this included Groceries spend of £439 (£383 / £325) which puts a bit of a stake through the heart of the “Huel will reduce your food bill” argument (see my post on my Huel Challenge here for more info). However we are only about half way through our supplies of Huel and the freezer is literally bursting at the seams with food, so we are going to just run those supplies down and just buy sundries for October and see if we can have a really low one to balance this out. The TV licence bill, which we pay yearly, also bumped this up but maybe next year we should go down The Savings Ninja route of not getting one!?
  • Holiday £81 (£406 / £333) – Paid for car hire for our holiday to Menorca which is actually this week!
  • Going out £814 (£532 / £467) – Went out a fair bit but also includes some tickets to things we bought in advance.
  • Transport £150 (£650 / £192) – Pretty standard month here. The new car is still going well and I’m loving it. We have got our MPG up to a monumental 50.5MPG which I am very happy with! Still can’t believe it was on around the 44MPG mark when we bought it, some people must be horrendously inefficient drivers!
  • Personal Care £139 (£109 / £92) – Mrs T had a haircut so slightly above budget.
  • Home/Garden £111 (£155 / £100) – We bought a few exciting household bits such as new Net Curtains, Printer Ink, and some DIY bits and bobs. Whoop 🙂
  • Hobbies/Sport £173 (£105 / £149) – I actually got a few rounds of golf in! I was very happy about this. Played Seaford head up on the cliffs on a very nice but windy day, it was lovely. I also signed up to the Brighton Half Marathon and Tunbridge Wells Half which are both next February.
  • Admin £10 (£17 / £20)
  • Financial £143 (£23 / £15) – Home insurance. I don’t think I put this in this category last year as this is going to put us over budget (although not by much) but not really sure and can’t really be bothered to check 🙂
  • Children £106 (£89 / £60) – Got some winter clothes for her not the weather is turning. She is starting to grow up pretty fast! And it’s time to welcome back my occasional feature “TFS Jr’s catchphrase of the month” – Which this month is…. drumroll please…. “I done a massive Poo!” 😀 – Maybe I’m just immature but it cracks me up every time 🙂
  • Gifts/Charity £193 (£407 / £187) – In case anyone has forgotten, I pledged to donate 10% of my betting/matched betting profits as per my post here. Unfortunately only £110 for the charities this month, I was on for a good month with over £3000 in profit but lost over £2K in about 3-4 days to make it very average in the end! Boo! Such are the fortunes of the Each Way No Lay bettor. We actually caught up on most of the donations we owed from previous months and gave a chunky donation to St Catherine’s Hospice, a local homeless charity, topped up my Kiva and Deki accounts, plus a few other smaller sponsors and donations. *Insert warm fuzzy feeling here*!

income

Figures in the same format as expenses…

  • Total £5588 +£395 Pension (£8428 / £4422) – Still smashing it on the income!
  • TFS Income £2553 +£395 Pension (£2748 / £2500) – Slightly more than usual, maybe due to some tax back or something like that. Not sure!
  • Mrs T Income £541 (£435 / £600) – Standard month for Mrs T
  • Ratesetter £206 (£50 / £5) – Ratesetter have bought their old, better offer back again! You now only have to invest £1000 for 1 year to receive a £100 bonusBut it runs out soon, so click this link here (<– obviously it’s a referral link! 1) to get started.
  • Child benefit £82 (£93 / £82) – Nice as usual to receive this. This means 4 people signed up last month, thank you, whoever you are!?
  • Sold items £1048 (£118 / £0) – This was basically us selling the car. We got £800 for the car which I was very happy with (bought it for £1300 2 years ago so around £250/year of depreciation which seems fair). I also included the tax and car insurance refund into this figure as well.
  • Matched Betting / Gambling Hustles £1090 (££2968 / £750) – A bit of a bump back down to Earth after last months stratospheric profits, but hey, not bad going and especially considering I wasn’t really “on it” much this month and mainly just sticking a few bets on via my phone when I could spare 5 minutes to check. I’ll take it!

If you are interested in each way sniping and haven’t gotten going with it yet, I have written a couple of guides but before giving you the links, please read and really think about the following disclaimer:

It’s NOT easy money, you can lose, especially over the short term, there are many ups and downs, and it’s not for the faint of heart. Having said that, if you wanted to know exactly what Each Way Sniping is and missed my guides I just wrote on the subject, check our part 1 here, and part 2 here.

Obviously if you want to make any money doing matched betting or each way sniping you should be using OddsMonkey… so here is my usual spiel about that:

If anyone is interested I have been using Odds Monkey matched betting software (<–affiliate link) for this, which having tried a few different ones out there, I found to be a far superior product in pretty much every way to everything else I tried. Check it out if you are new to matched betting, there are loads of great tutorials to get you going and you can try it for free. One of the best things about it is the Forum/Community aspect as you can learn loads of new and interesting ways to profit from gambling that aren’t just your standard “Do offer, lay off, get free bet, lay off, win £3.50” type of, let’s face, quite boring, time consuming and laborious matched betting methods. Some of these methods are what helped me to have a bumper Cheltenham 2017 and are currently bringing me in over £1000 per month betting on each way sniping! Now, back to the update!

savings rate, net worth and all of that haberdashery

Our 4th highest spending month of the year so far, yet a decent income means we still achieve a half respectable in month savings rate of 34.78% and brings our average for the year only down slightly to 52.01%. Still above 50% somehow! Wowsers! Window payment will come out next month which will surely scupper this completely, but we’ll see.

Anyway, net worth did this:

Excluding house equity: £201,974 / +£1,610 / +0.80%

Including house equity: £286,935 / +£1962 / +0.69%

Liquid Freedom: £106,296 / +£896 / +0.85%

Only investment I did was putting £1K into a 10% return property investment with The House Crowd. I WILL DEFINITELY PUT SOME MONEY INTO A SIPP OR ISA THIS MONTH YOU HAVE MY WORD ON THIS!!!! 🙂

other updates

Huel – I’ve actually really enjoyed doing this challenge so far and definitely feel a bit better for it. I won’t say too much and save it for the full write up when I get back from holiday, but I think Huel will continue to be a part of my life for a little while yet.

Blog – As well as the Huel update, I still owe you part 3 of my each way betting mini series where I will wrap things up, do a big FAQ and show you some more stats. I am on holiday next week so not much will be going on but I do have a post scheduled which I won’t reveal too much about but will be a sort of collaboration with a few other bloggers. So look out for that one!

Running – I did the Reigate Half Marathon in which I narrowly missed out on a PB by about 30 seconds. Shame but never thought I would get anywhere near it to be honest, so was very happy with the result of 1:28:45. This has renewed my aim to get a really good time in the Brighton half next Feb, which is fairly flat, so with good conditions and some decent training I think I could realistically go sub 1:25. Two days later I ran the Run The River 10k in London, which was great fun despite the sore legs from the previous race (signed up as people from work were doing it and didn’t realise the dates were so close until after I’d paid up!). Naturally I didn’t get a great time here but was still pretty happy with 46:17 – especially considering none of the roads of footpaths were closed off so it was a bit of a free for all! See some more pics below… it was crazy with 1000’s of blue T-shirted runners taking over the streets of London for an hour or two. We got to run across Tower bridge twice and the Millennium bridge which was pretty cool.

Takin’ over a tunnel

God help any pedestrians trying to come the other way!

Tower bridge in all it’s glory after the run

Other – We celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary with a night away down in Emsworth. Very nice part of the world I have to say! As I mentioned earlier I had about 2 weeks off work (was due to be 4 weeks but I agreed to work 1.5 weeks of overtime as a favour). It was still great to have that much time off and the weather was mainly lovely, so we got out and about for a few walks and I got some jobs done around the house and garden. It was a great month all round and after a pretty pants August, it was much needed.
